This book is at the top of the list because the subject is probably the most important. As McGuane says "...the array of arcane knots...the leader...is attached to the fly...and to choose (a knot) is to make a moral choice. You are made to understand that it would not be impossible to fight about it or, at the very least, to quibble darkly." Well, maybe it's not quite that serious. Or maybe it is, ....when you're standing there completely empty, deflated and forlorn with a slack line that moments ago was throbbing and pulsing .This book has easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams, plus special hints for tying knots at maximum strength. Don't lose `em after you hook `em!

Everything by Lefty is also at the top of my list - good, usable information. Clear and concise, Lety will give you the information you need. Numerous other books are available. I especially like his casting instructions - somewhat unorthodox, but easy to grasp, and effective.
To Thomas McGuane I will be eternally grateful. His books were what started my interest in fly-fishing. Occasionally I had seen people fishing with a fly while I spinfished for trout up on the Chattooga River. Then I read these two books and life was never the same - thank goodness (and Tom). Though both books are novels and not really about fishing, it's obvious that McGuane knows and loves the sport. His collection of essays on sport, An Outside Chance, has some of
my favorite passages. Unfortunately, it's hard to find a copy these days. Luckily, there're lots more great titles.
A truly unique writer, albeit for particular tastes. Trout Fishing in America is a technically a novel, but more a collection of strange tales (like the trout stream for sale by the foot in the Cleveland Wrecking Yard) and memories so real they'll bring a tear to your eye, plus a bit of trout fishing related in Brautigan's singular form. If you like this book, you'll be glad it's in a 3-book volume with 2 other works.

Another of my favorite authors - this is the story of a fly fisher gone wrong. A stunning writer - don't judge him by what the movies have done to his books (Wolf and Legends of the Fall).
Order a Gift Certificate for any book- makes a great gift for the fisher!
